OUR WHY

Our Why:

On November 14, 2025 we lost our hero, our husband, our father John Beam, who dedicated more than 40 years of his life to serving the Oakland community. For us, the loss was deeply personal, and we also recognise Coach Beam’s impact extended far beyond our family. He belonged to a community, to generations of young people, and to everyone who was shaped by his belief, his leadership, and his love.

We started Coach Beam’s Legacy Foundation because we could not let his work end with his passing. Coach Beam believed deeply in the power of sport to bring people together, to teach discipline and responsibility, and to build confidence that carried far beyond the field. He believed that every young person deserved someone in their corner—someone who would show up, push them to be better, and remind them of their worth.

This Foundation exists to continue the lessons Coach lived every day. It’s about teaching young people the X’s and O’s, while also teaching accountability, self-esteem, and perseverance. It’s about helping them run faster and play harder, but also making sure they show up to class, do their work, and believe in themselves.

Most importantly, it’s about continuing to tell young people what Beam told so many over the years: “I believe in you so you can believe in yourself.”

We know we cannot carry this mission forward alone. This Foundation is built on community—on people who believe, as Coach Beam did, in investing time, resources, and heart into the next generation. Through your support, his legacy lives on not just in memory, but in action—creating opportunity, building leaders, and changing lives for years to come.
